Sugar
addiction is similar to any other addiction. When an individual ingests a
stimulant, their brain rewards them by releasing dopamine. The dopamine then causes the individual to
“feel good”, which leads to a desire for more of whatever substance caused the
initial spike in dopamine. Over time,
less dopamine is released in response to the same amount of stimulant. The reduced “reward” leads the individual to
increase their intake of the substance, leading to addiction. Sugar acts in this manner. Its ability to cause spikes in an
individual’s dopamine level reinforces bad eating habits that can lead to
numerous health problems.
