Blog Post #3
During the past week, I researched more about what initially caused America’s sugar addiction. I found that the over consumption of carbs was a main cause. This over-consumption began with a government recommendation to eat less saturated fat, which led people to replace the fat in their diet with sugar. I also found that stress was a main cause. Stress causes people to want comfort food, as they attempt to feel better. Also, the busy lifestyles people have now-a-days does not allow sufficient time to prepare a healthy homemade dinner. Instead, people will often do the easy thing -- get a big mac from McDonalds. To read more about these causes, check out the “Causes of Sugar Addiction” tab to the right.
I also researched more about the effects of sugar addiction. I learned that sugar can affect the body both mentally and physically. A person can be mentally affected by experiencing sugar highs and sugar crashes. These highs and crashes can cause emotions to swing from happy/energetic to sad/irritable. A person can also be physically affected by excess sugar. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer are all problems that can result from sugar addiction. If you would like to read more about the effects of sugar addiction, I have compiled all of the info that I have learned so far into a write up in a tab to the right!
Everyone knows sugar is not good for you, but I don't think they realize just how bad eating too much sugar is for you. My goal for this curriculum is for it to help children realize this at a young age, before they are negatively affected by eating too much sugar. Next week, I plan on starting to write the curriculum.
This idea is quote clever and I know from a personal experience that foods can have the natural sugars as well as the sugars added which we don't normally think about. I think it could be an interesting idea to add photos and add some insight to foods that maybe we don't that have sugars in them.
ReplyDeleteWow the research you have so far is very interesting. It is shocking to see that over-carbsumption is one of the main causes for Americas sugar addiction. Also, I think that you should use last semester's health unit as an additional reference for your research. Good luck!

Nice to see the level of research going into this is phenomenal. What I really can't wait to see are your results for the curriculum. It's really important to find out what young kids understand, and what they realize about eating habits, addictions, and how to spot sugar even when it isn't obvious. Looking forward to your next post.

It's amazing what just a couple of weeks of research can teach you! For the curriculum, I think you should focus on the things that may not seem as obvious to let people know how harmful too much sugar is. I can't wait to start learning new things from your curriculum!

I like the fact you are presenting knowledge on a very unhealthy epidemic in any countries including America. Once you start the curriculum and write up all the negative effects, etc. I would advise giving some tips to help people steer their diets away from loads of sugar and into hearty meals that are easy to make, delicious, and nutritious.
ReplyDeleteHey I really appreciate your cause! I think it's cool that you are creating a curriculum for sugar--why don't we have that for Health? Maybe when you are finished with your project you can share your idea with the driver's ed/health faculty. Also you can share it with some local elementary schools and hopefully it goes big? I mean this is pretty feasible You just have to share it on social media, connect with education system and all.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you are addressing a growing problem in the world we live in today. By spreading awareness on the true affects of sugar, you can help educate the American public to eat less of it and promote healthier life styles
ReplyDeleteI think the research you've done so far is great! I can totally relate to your topic because I will eat sugar when I'm stressed out or having a bad day. It would be nice to know what to eat to satisfy our cravings instead of eating sugar. Maybe you could give alternative options. I also think that this is an awesome project because so many people in America today are eating way too much sugar. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteVideos like this might be a good hook for introducing your curriculum:
